This is a great shelter for solo trips. Compact and lightweight but also very waterproof. I've used it on a peak in the Tararuas in the snow and in torrential rain with no issues. I couldn't find anything else with this waterhead rating.. Best macpac product I have owned!

Great product
I found the bush cocoon when looking for lightweight tents and decided that this would be right for me. It's small and light enough to carry on multi-day trips, without having to sacrifice durability. There is enough room to fit my hiking bag above my head while I sleep. Surprisingly I've experienced very little to no condensation each night despite it being a very small space. It's great that you can open up the side door and leave the flyscreen zipped up to get some extra breeze in if it's not raining or to lie and look at the stars. I have used this bivvy in heavy rain, 80km/h winds, and hail, and have always stayed dry. A bonus if that if it's raining, you can climb right in without worrying about getting wet while setting it up. You can also set it up and fall asleep in it in less time than it takes to set up a regular tent.
Cons: The only con is that there is no vestibule so nowhere to keep your muddy shoes.

Outshines my outdoor research
Just replaced my outdoor research alpine bivvy with one of these. Only slept one night in it in warm conditions so not fully tested yet but ease of getting in with side entry and the improved head clearance having an adequate hoop over the head and being able to guy out keeps a lot of the shell off your sleeping bag and face and breathability outshines my OR bag. Has room to prop your self up and read a book, i had a fair bit of gear in with me but not my 85L pack probably could get in with a small weekender pack. storm flap over the entry zip is sufficient and rarely snags when zipping. due too being a lot wider then other bags change of position for those restless sleepers is as easy as in a tent. Is well worth the extra grams over the more compact bags.

Best shelter money can buy
Used the Bush Cocoon on a recent solo trip in Central Otago. Handled torrential rain, sleet, snow and G force winds marvellously. The Bush Cocoon is so warm inside that I found myself unzipping my sleeping bag overnight, only to wake up the next morning and find the ground outside covered in snow. Compared to other Bivy Bags the Bush Cocoon is in a class of its own. Where most people feel claustrophobic in a standard Bivy Bag, the shape of the Bush Cocoon gives more than enough space to breath and move around in as-well as offering superior water proofing and ventilation. 100% recommend this to anyone who is doing SOLO adventures and is wanting the best possible shelter. Only suggestion I can think of is including a little pole to hold the foot of the shelter up. Would have come in handy as I was camping on a bare plateau with no trees or sticks to tie the guy line to.

Not just an extra!
Took my two youngsters along the toughest parts of the Larapinta trail for 4 days. Rather than carry two tents, I chose to carry a 2 man and the Macpac Cocoon. Not only was the extra weight minimal, the set up was a godsend. I was amazed how comfortable the sleep was and had NO condensation despite the outside nighttime temps reaching the zero mark. Plenty of room for me and my important gear. I'm going to use the bivy as the sole shelter when I tackle other treks.

Excellent piece of gear for those overnighter`s by yourself
After a problem with erecting a new tent recently, in blizzard like conditions, where the instructions were for a previous model, I decided to erect my Bush Cocoon on the back lawn before heading bush. Very quick & simple to erect.Blew up my air mattress & rolled my new sleeping bag out to make sure everything fitted OK. With the shape of the Cocoon, I had a bit of storage space above my head for gear that I wanted protected from the weather.
With the hoop arrangement over my head, I didn't find the Cocoon any bit claustrophobic.
Got to my selected camping spot, quickly got my camp up & headed off till dark for a hunt. On my return, hopped into my sleeping bag inside the Cocoon after tea and had a very comfortable night`s sleep. Got some heavy showers during the night and I hoped Macpac`s claims about being waterproof were right. Awoke on daylight to no rain and lovely and warm and dry in my Cocoon. Unzipped the outer skin and put my arm out to find everything outside was saturated. Up & zip closed the Cocoon with all my gear I wasn't taking with me, inside, with the knowledge that they would keep nice & dry.Was away about 5 hours during which there was quite a bit of rain. Got back and a pool had formed on the Cocoon like it would on a large plastic bag. Tipped this off and opened the Cocoon to find everything inside completely dry. Packed up my sleeping bag & mattress, then quickly shook all the bush matter off the Cocoon and packed it away in its bag. It took me 30 mins to have some muesli & coffee, clean up my camp and have all my gear packed ready to go.
With this setup, the total weight of my air mattress, sleeping bag & Bush Cocoon is 2.8kg and are very compact, so don`t use a lot of the room in my pack. All were purchased at Macpac and are exactly what I need as I am now a couple of years north of 60.
What I like about the Cocoon, is that even when having a camp set up for a few days hunting, this will give me the option of hunting those far away spots right through the Golden hour & not having to worry about struggling back a couple of Km`s to camp in the dark. Just set your Cocoon up where you end up.
Compared to the rubbish we used, I can`t believe how good the gear is you can get today for the money you have to pay, and I would recommend to anyone serious about spending a bit of time in the outdoors, Buy the best you can afford, as over many years use, it will end being the cheapest gear you could have bought.
Good Luck

What’s the pole length when it’s folded down? Want to check it it’ll fit in my handlebar bag for bikepacking. Also, can it be setup without using any stakes, just in case the ground isn’t suitable? Thanks.
Brian M on Jan 6, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi Brian, total packed and rolled size is 38cm long x 13cm diameter. The poles will be a few CM's shorter.

Thanks, the Macpac Team
