Why we made this
Our lightest two-person tent, the Duolight is perfect for the weight-conscious hiker wanting a highly livable, three-season tent.
  • Product Description
Engineered for minimal weight, optimal space and weather protection in New Zealand' conditions, the three-season Duolight is as good as it gets. The tent weighs in at just 2.17 kg and with two main poles and small ridge pole between the dual entrances, the Duolight tent maximises liveable volume. Our factory seam-sealed fly is constructed with UV20™ PE fabric, a quality material that strikes the balance between weight and performance. Coated with silicone on the outside to repel moisture and PE on the inside for waterproofness, UV20™ PE offers the weather protection you need during the summer. The Duolight utilises mesh extensively throughout the inner, allowing greater airflow for comfort in warmer climates. Two generous vestibules provide space for cooking and gear. We've incorporated the Multi-Pitch™ system, allowing you to pitch the fly independent of the inner so that the inner stays dry when packing up in wet conditions. The Duolight’s DAC Featherlite NSL™ poles are green anodised, minimising the use of toxic chemicals during the production process, while also providing strength and stability.

100% recommend Macpac Duolight Hiking Tent!!
I would highly recommend this product to other fellow outdoor enthusiasts. I have not had a chance to take it out on a trip yet, but I assembled it at home to check it out. Very easy assembly, and I really like the multipitch idea. It means the tent is completely opened out whereas some cheaper tents can be very saggy. Very roomy too and love the idea of two doors to avoid annoying the other person to go to the toilet during the night. Great size of vestibules to fit gear as well. I'm excited to test it out in the outdoors!

65km/h winds no problem !
Just come back from my first weekend away in this tent. I was really very impressed with its performance. Our first night was up on a mountain top where it was blowing 65km/h and this tent handled it like a pro. We spent the night getting buffered around but never once did I get the sense that the tent was struggling. The tent is pretty light and easy to fit in your pack, set-up is also very easy and the tent packs down just as quickly. I bought this when on special and certainly is very good value for money.

After having read all these reviews pre-purchase, I have to say I was a bit disappointed in the duolight. It is indeed light and spacious for a 2 person tent, and I really like the double entrances and vestibules. The issue I have is that the floor is not as water resistant as the other reviews suggest. We had no rain on our night out, but there was a heavy dew. The dew came through the floor of the tent and the underneaths of our sleeping mats were soaked. There was also a ton of condensation on the inside of the fly (even though we had slept with both of the vents open). Overall the experience was of waking up decidedly damp. Next time I will pitch it with a footprint, I think that will help.

Wet flor... Not good tent
Very desapointed with the tent. I bought a sleeping bag and a matress from them and Im happy with them, so i got the tent but this Doesnt seems to be the same quality. The flor of my tent is wet every morning. I put a litle mat under the tent and where the mat cover the inside is fine but all arround where is uncoverded is wet. So my bags are wet every morning and the matress too. For the price of the tent it should come with a custom mat insted the straps. The room of the tent is perfect and is nice the pitching sistem.

Response from Macpac
We have contacted Mauro via email. Suggested this needs to be dropped into any Macpac store, and they will send to our repairs team for waterproof testing. If the material is deemed faulty, a full replacement will be offered. Thanks the Macpac Team

Duolight's First Outing Success
I've just got home from testing this tent on its first outing up on a local mountain. I was using the tent solo and had massive amounts of room. My mate was there with his smaller tent (which weighed only 200gm less) and to say that he was impressed is an understatement. I wont be surprised if another MacPac Duolight is purchased very soon.

This tent continues to blow my mind after 2 years of use. It's incredibly light, two people can split it and carry around 1kg each. Big vestibules either side for gear and boots, but the inside is roomy enough for packs as well. The short horizontal pole across the top stretches out the sides of the tent and makes it very spacious and comfortable inside, you could even fit 3 people if they are fine with being cozy. Has been used in the snow but for high wind alpine areas you need to face the shorter side into the wind.
Woke up at 5am in the Royal NP to torrential rain and a 4cm puddle forming under the tent - it felt like a water bed and we were totally dry! Dragged it up the slope a bit and went back to sleep ;)

More than exceed expectations!
This tent stood the test under a straight 7hr 8mm downpour. At 6°c, we couldn’t feel cozier inside and huddled in our overland 400 sleeping bags. Absolutely no leaks and condensation on the inner tent, we slept comfortably against the rhythmic patter of raindrops. We used a 20cm high double air mattress, and still had enough room to sit 2 bagpacks and 2 cameras. And omygoodness can I just rave about the pockets! If you are settling in for your sleep and wanna put away your glasses, rings, watch, book.. this pocket is so helpful. They come with 2 at each end, depending where you rest your head, so each camper gets his own pocket. Convenient and so useful! Setting up and keeping of the tent is a joy, and can easily be done by one person.
Easy to clean too, rinse and hang under the shade, all dry and ready to pack in <24hrs!
Can’t sing enough praises and will definitely bring it on every trip with us! Wish there’s a 4-man tent for this series!!

Brilliant job Macpac. Again.
I’ve been using an Olympus and Minaret, supplemented by a Fairydown (for the old timers!), for the last 30 years. The Fairydown has been retired and replaced by the Duolight (same specs & shape but much lighter).

It has handled Tasmania’s Reserve and South West without hassle, and the advances in technology over time (especially cutting weight) are phenomenal. It is probably the quickest and easiest pitch I’ve come across.

[The only observation for improvement would be to beef up the spares kit: the more plastic parts, the greater the risk of something breaking. Suggest a spare Jake’s Foot fly connector, at least, and guy cord cleat. ]

This is a genuine top quality tent that, for its design parameters) can handle most three-season conditions with ease and with plenty of room. [For those who are quick to complain about the size of any tent, buy a bigger one and take the weight gain.]

Brilliant job Macpac. Again.

The perfect tent for us
My wife and I were looking for a simple, good quality tent for overnight trips, not planning to go out in the snow or harsh conditions. This tent is perfect for us: every aspect is well thought through, elegant design, spacious and light, easy to erect and pack away. Our first night out, it rained heavily so that a rivulet formed under/around our tent; nonetheless, we remained completely dry inside. Highly recommended.

Hi team what has changed in the tent that it went from a 2 season to a 3 season?
Mike N on Jan 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hello Mike,

I have talked to our design team, and nothing has really changed in the design - only the way we categories it.

Season ratings are a vexed issue – the issues we’re really concerned about are:
•Wind (high winds are possible likely at any time of year in NZ)
•Ventilation (i.e. how much mesh does the tent have, how warm / cold will it be)
•Snow – is the tent designed to be used in snow

This tent clearly isn’t designed for use in the snow, but we think it is suitable for 3 season use below the bush line, so the previous “2 season” rating was probably underselling it.

Kind regards, The Macpac Team
How do you pitch the Duolight outer and inner together? Thanks Mike
Mike P on Jun 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello I gifted it to my partner for his bday but he said he didnt have any difficulty in pitching it and its a very warm, light and spacious tent.
Are there any better pictures of the pole structure? We are after a tent that has multiple crossings and will keep up in a stiff NZ norwester.
Jaimita d on Feb 14, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Jaimita, i have emailed you pictures of the pole structure and a brief description. Hope this is helpful, cheers :)
What is the weight of the tent in my pack? There is a huge difference between max and min weight in the specs.
Neil S on Jan 27, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Good question. The total weight (fly/poles/tent) is 2.17kg and the weight of just the fly and necessary poles will be 1.36kg. As this is a multipitch tent - you can pitch just the fly, or both the tent and fly together depending on conditions and your weight restrictions for carrying.
