Product Description
The Mercury Hooded Down Jacket is a warm insulation layer that’s perfect for urban wear and travel. Made from a lightweight nylon fabric — complete with bluesign® certification — and filled with 650 loft RDS duck down, this jacket is constructed to provide warmth throughout your upper body, arms and head. Like all our other down products, we've chosen to use Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified duck down because we support the ethical sourcing of down and feathers. To aid heat retention, we've added a soft elastic binding to the cuffs, hood and hem, effectively helping to trap heat against your body. The jacket has two zipped hand pockets and the regular fit means you can add additional layers underneath or throw a hard shell on over the top. A small stuff sack is included for easy packing.

Care
Wash only as necessary
Warm hand wash in non-detergent pure soap or Nikwax Down Wash®
Handle with care when wet
Rinse well by gently kneading the down

Is the mercury warmer than the ascend down jacket ?
BEST ANSWER: Hi Mo,
These are very, very similar in warmth but looking at the specs, the Ascend would be ever so slightly warmer.
Both have 650 fill power, but the Ascend has 179g of fill weight whereas the Mercury has 137g.

What is the difference between Mercury and Uber jackets?
BEST ANSWER: Hi Mary,
The Mercury Jacket has a higher fill weight, making it warmer than the Uber Jacket. But the Uber Jacket has a DWR finish, which is a water repellent treatment.

I am looking at getting a warmer jacket at some stage. I currently have a Pisa Polartec ,which is my main insulation when tramping, and a Mercury down jacket, which I use as a 'hut jacket'.(Although both also get worn a lot in civilisation. And I unfortunately I spent a lot more time in civilisation than I do in the wilderness.)
But I wouldn't mind getting something warmer for when it's really cold (primarily for hit use, but also for layering when really cold - and for really cold days in civilisation as well), and I am particularly interested in learning more about the Icefall and the Sundowner.
I see the Icefall is much lighter. But it also has a better fill power and what appears to be better insulating material.
So here are my questions:
1/ Which is warmer - the Icefall or the Sundowner?
2/ Am I correct in assuming they both have similar water resistance?
3/ Am I correct in assuming the Icefall packs down much smaller? If it does, how does it pack down compared with (say) my Mercury?
4/ How much warmer are they than my Pisa Polartec and Mercury?

1/ The Icefall has 95g compared to 255g of down the Sundowner (in a medium size for example) however the Sundowner has larger baffles so will be warmer overall. However the Sundowner is much heavier (750g vs 370g) and doesn't pack away as small.
2/ Both fabrics have a C6 DWR coating on them & hyper dry down
3/ The Icefall Jacket is our Alpine Series and packs the smallest into the left Pocket. It packs down to quite a flat and square shape. The second smallest is the Mercury, which you already have and know that it packs a tubular shape. The biggest to pack away is the Sundowner, which like your Mercury, stuffs into a stuff sack to form a tubular shape.
4/ For weight, warmth and packability, the Icefall is best and the most technical out of the three. Overall, the Sundowner is warmest with the Mercury being a great middle man.

I have a Pisa Polartec jacket , which I use as my main insulation when tramping, and a Mercury down jacket, which I use as a hut jacket. Although both also get a fair bit of urban use.
But I can't work out which is the warmer of the two. I am leaning towards the Pisa Polartec, yet I would have expected down to perform better. Any thoughts?

Which is warmer will come down to your own personal preference and is unfortunately difficult to quantify because so many factors come into play.
It’s awesome that you are getting so much wear out of you Pisa - It will degrade in time however as it becomes more worn in. We still producing this style so it should still be available when the time comes if you are needing a new one.

How does this jacket (Mercury) rate with the Halo jacket in regards to warmth?

Garment temperatures are a tricky one as each individual will experience warmth differently depending on their own metabolism and physical state; the weather and the other garments they are wearing as part of their layering system. However, we can say that with appropriate layers, the Halo Hooded Jacket has a slightly less spec Down used (600 loft 80/20 - with a fill weight on a size medium of: 219 grams) so has more down in it. It is a bulkier fit and will be more than adequate for typical winter-time conditions encountered in NZ and Australia.
The Mercury Hooded Jacket uses a more higher spec down (650 loft 90/10 - with a fill weight of 136 grams) This will need less down inside making it not as bulky fitting but equally more than adequate for a typical winter too . It will really come down to which styling you would prefer.

Is the outer fabric showerproof or have any water repellent quantities?

The Macpac Mercury Down Jacket-Mens outer fabric has coating of DWR (Durable Weather Resistance) which means it will take light rain but not take heavy rain.

How much does it cost to repair a rip.?
BEST ANSWER: Hi Kalausia, thanks for your comment. It depends on the size of the rip - between $20 - $50 for a single rip on one panel. Our in house repairs team do their best to find as close of a colour match as possible where a patch is needed. If you visit your local Macpac they can give you more specific direction on sighting the garment.
