Why we made this
Technical down for hiking in cold, damp conditions — the Sundowner features 600 loft HyperDRY™ water-resistant RDS duck down within a finely woven Pertex® Quantum outer shell.
  • Product Description
A technical down jacket for hiking, the Sundowner features 600 loft HyperDRY™ water-resistant RDS duck down within a finely woven Pertex® Quantum outer shell. Certified by the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), HyperDRY™ is a fluorocarbon-free water-resistant down that's been treated with a natural wax-based compound to encourage moisture to bead and roll off the down cluster. As a light and soft fabric with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish and bluesign® certification, Pertex® Quantum allows the down to fully loft for maximum insulation in cold, damp climates. Internal fleece cuffs, zipped hand pockets and an adjustable hood and hem add the finishing touches to this performance focused down jacket — all helping to keep the warmth in and the cold out.

Warm as toast
I wanted a jacket that would really keep me warm. My Pisa Polatec is great for tramping, and my Mercury keeps me warm in huts. But I wanted something that would do the job when it was really cold, and not only in the wilderness, but also when I was faced with a 20 minute wait on a railway station platform on a freezing winter morning.

After some research, I opted for a Sundowner. (I thought about the Ember, but decided it was overkill for my requirements.) And I am very happy with my choice. It has kept me as warm as toast on the coldest winter mornings, when my other jackets weren't quite enough on their own.

If you want a down jacket that you can depend on to drive the chills away, the Sundowner is well worth trying out.

Perfect down jacket
I love this jacket, it is very warm, comfortable and light. I like how it has the fleece around the wrists.

Great Jacket!
I bought this jacket in June 2019. It was on sale and finally jumped at the chance to own a down fill insulated jacket. I haven't looked back since. I live in Tasmania and have taken this on the overland track and temps were around +3 overnight and I was quite warm with it and thermals underneath. It fits well and I particularly like the hood on it. Great buy when on sale.

Poor packaging resulted in damaging goods
The jacket is great but the packaging wasn’t. The jacket was squashed into a too small plastic envelope without anything around it. The combination of the lack of interior packing and the squashing of the jacket into a small package meant that when I cut the edge of the envelope to open it I also snipped the jacket. Not very good. In future please put an inner wrapping on parcels and don’t squash them so tightly into plastic envelopes.

Great Jacket
I purchased this jacket for an exchange semester in Canada. It was able to withstand -30 (plus windchill) with no issues. The water resistance is also good. I have worn it both in the rain and snow without issue. It is also a very comfortable jacket and feels cozy.

My only issue with the jacket are the Velcro cuffs. They don't seem to be the highest quality so I always keep them loose in an effort to preserve them. But the jacket is still very warm with them loose.

I am 182cm and 80kg and a medium fits me well, and leaves me enough room to wear a heavy jumper under the jacket.

Fantastic jacket
I am ladies size 12 and bought Mens jacket size L. It fits comfortably over cardigan, easy to drive in the car, is so light and easy to slip on and off, hood is great, and I especially love the polar fleece inner lining at the wrists, keeps me so warm and feels sooo lovely. Material used for outer part of jacket feels top quality. I also bought one for my son in Canberra. 10/10 for this jacket. Bec June 2019

Fantastic Warmth and Comfort
I used this jacket for my trip to China in January 2019. It was so warm that I didn't need to wear a mid-layer even once, and it got down to -25 degrees in Harbin! When you step outside of the hotels and shops in the middle of a China winter, the cold punches you in the face, but I never felt it in this jacket. I even wore it skiing and it kept me warm (too warm) and dry. You can wear this with a light merino base-layer and a t-shirt and you will be fine in very cold weather.

I am looking at getting a warmer jacket at some stage. I currently have a Pisa Polartec ,which is my main insulation when tramping, and a Mercury down jacket, which I use as a 'hut jacket'.(Although both also get worn a lot in civilisation. And I unfortunately I spent a lot more time in civilisation than I do in the wilderness.)

But I wouldn't mind getting something warmer for when it's really cold (primarily for hit use, but also for layering when really cold - and for really cold days in civilisation as well), and I am particularly interested in learning more about the Icefall and the Sundowner.

I see the Icefall is much lighter. But it also has a better fill power and what appears to be better insulating material.

So here are my questions:

1/ Which is warmer - the Icefall or the Sundowner?

2/ Am I correct in assuming they both have similar water resistance?

3/ Am I correct in assuming the Icefall packs down much smaller? If it does, how does it pack down compared with (say) my Mercury?

4/ How much warmer are they than my Pisa Polartec and Mercury?

BEST ANSWER: Hi Darryl,

Thank you for your enquiry.

1/ The Icefall has 95g compared to 255g of down the Sundowner (in a medium size for example) however the Sundowner has larger baffles so will be warmer overall. However the Sundowner is much heavier (750g vs 370g) and doesn't pack away as small.

2/ Both fabrics have a C6 DWR coating on them & hyper dry down

3/ The Icefall Jacket is our Alpine Series and packs the smallest into the left Pocket. It packs down to quite a flat and square shape. The second smallest is the Mercury, which you already have and know that it packs a tubular shape. The biggest to pack away is the Sundowner, which like your Mercury, stuffs into a stuff sack to form a tubular shape.

4/ For weight, warmth and packability, the Icefall is best and the most technical out of the three. Overall, the Sundowner is warmest with the Mercury being a great middle man.

Thanks - the Macpac Team

Hello
....I purchased a down jacket recently from the Stoney Creek range, called a Thermolite...the issue I'm having is with the inner layer of material...when I walk quietly with no haste the inside of the jacket produces or keeps the moisture from the arms and body torso...in other words it keeps everything in and does not breath..my question is to you...does your Sundowner jacket do the same?...makes ones sweat on arms and around the torso? Karl .
Karl B on Oct 25, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello Karl,

The Sundowner is made with Breathable Pertex® Quantum outer shell which will make the jacket breathable. It is an ideal jacket for hiking and climbing and made for this purpose.

Kind regards,
