Why we made this
Active insulation for the mountains, the Pisa is lined with Polartec® Alpha® Direct with 78% recycled content for an outstanding warmth-to-weight ratio, increased breathability and reliable moisture management.
  • Product Description
Active insulation at it's most versatile, the Pisa Polartec® Hooded Jacket utilises advanced fabric technology to directly warm your skin while maintaining a high level of breathability and managing moisture build up. Lined with Polartec® Alpha® Direct synthetic insulation featuring 78% recycled polyester content, the Pisa is a core product of our Alpine Series — our premium technical collection designed in partnership with the New Zealand Alpine Team (NZAT). Originally designed for the U.S. Special Forces and now helping to keep mountaineers and alpine adventurers warm and comfortable in harsh environments, Polartec® Alpha® Direct minimises weight by sitting directly against your skin and removing the need for a drop liner. Effectively regulating your body temperature during low and high intensity activity, Alpha® Direct offers superior breathability and dries fast. Wrapped in a bluesign® approved nylon ripstop fabric with a short-chain DWR C6 finish for improved moisture repellency, the Pisa is lightweight and packable — tucking into it's own pocket for lighter climbing or hiking. Bluesign® certification confirms these specific fabrics have been manufactured with responsible use of resources and the lowest possible impact on people and the environment.

What you waiting for
Gobsmacked at the performance of this jacket. Very light weight piece and so warm. Will be grabbing this jacket for many outings to come. If you are even considering the jacket just buy it!

Great piece of kit!
Unbelievable how something this light can be so warm and breathable! It's really comfy, fit is spot on for me (I'm 180cm tall and went with a medium size). Highly recommended.

My son loves it
I purchased this jacket for my son who needed a warm jacket but didn’t want a puffy one. I was disappointed when I unwrapped it. Looks very thin and has weird white fluffy stuff inside. Maybe this is the technically amazing element? However......My 19 year old son LOVES it and wears it over t-shirts every day. It will fit over sloppy joes when it gets colder. I wanted to send it back but he wouldn’t let me. Hope it’s as warm as it says when the weather gets really cold!

Unbelievably light, warm, and comfortable
I went into the Macpac Petone Outlet a few months ago to buy a replacement for my warmest fleece, and I was convinced to try on a Pisa Polartec jacket. I struggled to believe that something so flimsy could be warm, but I knew the advice I get in Macpac stores tends to be pretty good.

I was not disappointed. This jacket is unbelievably light, warm, and comfortable. Not only is it now my go-to insulating jacket when tramping, it is also now my go-to insulating jacket for going to work, going out in the weekend, and going everywhere else, and I cannot remember the last day I did not wear it.

Huge Fan of Alpha direct and this jacket.
This is a fantastic jacket. The alpha material is amazing. I have just worn this jacket for 4 days in the Tasmanian winter and today was up in Mount Field where is was well below zero with above 40km/hr winds along with snow and ice. I had a base layer and this jacket on. I was warm enough. The insulation is amazingly warm for its weight and quiet remarkable. All the lofty reviews of Polartec Alpha direct are all true. For such a thin insulating jacket it is remarkably warm.
Only negative - I wish the hood was adjustable and possibly there was a waist adjuster. I am unsure about durability of the outer material especially in the Australian bush.
This is my prime jacket for all winter hikes now.

Can you Please bring back the royal blue colour in the Pisa? I’ve worn mine out from almost daily wear as it is the best jacket I’ve ever had.

BEST ANSWER: Hello Kim,

We just received a new order of the Blue colour. It should be available for purchase within the next couple of weeks.

Kind regards,
The Macpac Team
I am looking at getting a warmer jacket at some stage. I currently have a Pisa Polartec ,which is my main insulation when tramping, and a Mercury down jacket, which I use as a 'hut jacket'.(Although both also get worn a lot in civilisation. And I unfortunately I spent a lot more time in civilisation than I do in the wilderness.)

But I wouldn't mind getting something warmer for when it's really cold (primarily for hit use, but also for layering when really cold - and for really cold days in civilisation as well), and I am particularly interested in learning more about the Icefall and the Sundowner.

I see the Icefall is much lighter. But it also has a better fill power and what appears to be better insulating material.

So here are my questions:

1/ Which is warmer - the Icefall or the Sundowner?

2/ Am I correct in assuming they both have similar water resistance?

3/ Am I correct in assuming the Icefall packs down much smaller? If it does, how does it pack down compared with (say) my Mercury?

4/ How much warmer are they than my Pisa Polartec and Mercury?

BEST ANSWER: Hi Darryl,

Thank you for your enquiry.

1/ The Icefall has 95g compared to 255g of down the Sundowner (in a medium size for example) however the Sundowner has larger baffles so will be warmer overall. However the Sundowner is much heavier (750g vs 370g) and doesn't pack away as small.

2/ Both fabrics have a C6 DWR coating on them & hyper dry down

3/ The Icefall Jacket is our Alpine Series and packs the smallest into the left Pocket. It packs down to quite a flat and square shape. The second smallest is the Mercury, which you already have and know that it packs a tubular shape. The biggest to pack away is the Sundowner, which like your Mercury, stuffs into a stuff sack to form a tubular shape.

4/ For weight, warmth and packability, the Icefall is best and the most technical out of the three. Overall, the Sundowner is warmest with the Mercury being a great middle man.

Thanks - the Macpac Team
I have a Pisa Polartec jacket , which I use as my main insulation when tramping, and a Mercury down jacket, which I use as a hut jacket. Although both also get a fair bit of urban use.

But I can't work out which is the warmer of the two. I am leaning towards the Pisa Polartec, yet I would have expected down to perform better. Any thoughts?

Also, I wear my Pisa Polartec seemingly all the time. Am I in danger of wearing it out?

BEST ANSWER: Hi Darryl,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Which is warmer will come down to your own personal preference and is unfortunately difficult to quantify because so many factors come into play.

It’s awesome that you are getting so much wear out of you Pisa - It will degrade in time however as it becomes more worn in. We still producing this style so it should still be available when the time comes if you are needing a new one.
