  • Product Description
A versatile mid layer for days in the mountains, whether it be climbing or other activities, this light active insulation will help to keep you warm. Made from Polartec® Alpha® Direct — the same insulation that was originally made for the U.S. Special Forces when they needed an advanced insulating fabric in their combat uniforms — the Nitro offers pared back performance. An evolution of fibre, Alpha® Direct eliminates the needs for a backing fabric and can be in direct contact with skin or other fabric layers, increasing breathability and reducing garment weight. Designed with alpinists and multi-sport athletes in mind, this minimalistic mid layer is warm and incredibly breathable.

Very nice ultralight mid-layer.
It looks and feels good. Still had no chance to use it on trial. Looking forward for it.

A jolly fine bit of kit
Stupidly light for just how warm this is.

Good idea but room for improvements
A bit too skinny, it’s tight under the armpits, despite a size l usually ample for me, hence the very long sleeves. Is a bit tight at the neck as well. The pocket is useless and should be traded for a 1/4 zip.
Otherwise, unbeatable weight/warm balance.

the lightest polartec jacket
Everything is good except: the chest pocket and hat are a little bit redundant.

Totally happy!
Really great Pullover. I‘m completely satisfied about the material. Size is fine as Slim fit. If you like more a loosely style, take one size bigger. Transport to Germany was also great and quick.

Great Workmanship and Warmth!
The pullover arrived quickly to my home in Canada via DHL and is exactly as pictured. I appreciate the quality stitching and fabrics. I am very impressed with its warmth, especially given that it weighs almost nothing! I will definitely recommend to others!

Nearly perfect
Received it about a week ago and wore it almost daily since then in mild and cool conditions (–3 to +15 °C). Very pleased so far. It runs small, if you plan to put it over more than a thin baselayer you need to size up. The length of the sleeves is generous but not too much. The thumb loops are not necessary in my opinion and even a bit annoying since they pop out every now and then and get in the way with gloves. I cut them off eventually. The material is more durable than I expected but it is certainly not suitable for bushwhacking. The breathability is breathtaking (pun intended). That means you need to cover it when it's getting windy. Together with a breathable windbreaker this is more comfortable than a midweight fleece but equally warm and much lighter. The fabric loses small amounts of insulation that clings to my merino baselayer. I hope this will cease after a couple of laundry cycles. As others mentioned before I would ditch the pocket. Also: why is the pocket glued AND sewn on? If I could make wishes I would ask for 3 cm more length (because the shirt rides up easily on its own) and a version without hood. Crew neck would do, a zippered version would be weighed down disproportionately by a zipper.

Recommended but go Larger
Very, very warm! Good dispatch and service from Macpac. Bought medium (6ft, 94kgs and 42 chest) and it’s a small fit only good for first layer against the skin. If you want to put this over your basic layers buy a larger size. This will work as a replacement for a puffy for long distance, ultra light thru hikers, just put your rain jacket over the top and drop the puffy. Hard to do but will work and will drop your weight. Excellent product but go larger on size.

I haven't managed to rip it yet. The alpha fabric is still quite lofty but it has noticeably got thinner like with all fleeces over time (Like a person going bold).

I have worn it over 200 times now since I bought it last Christmas for work and hiking. I have probably washed it about 20 times.

I have attached a close up picture of the fabric after 200+ washes.

Overall I really like the Nitro. Its hard to beat its warmth to weight ratio. My Nitro is 125grams (4.4oz) with out the pocket and with a Melly hood mod. Honestly I couldn't put number on how much warmth it has lost over time. It still feels the same as when I bought it. It must have lost some warmth though.

This is the ultimate fleece for ultralight backpacking. I would love it if the next iteration of this product could have the pocket removed and for the hood to be cinch able like in the linked the video. Also more colours would be nice.

Can you ship to USA?
calhan on Dec 17, 2019
Unfortunately Macpac isn’t currently shipping to USA. We hope to get this rectified in the near future.
In the meantime, the only way would be to get it shipped to a friend or family member that lives outside of the USA, and they could then re-send onto you.

Kind regards,
The Macpac Team
Has anyone else purchased one of these? I have, excessive fluff and pulling. To the point where covered in it. I've washed it too, still fluff!!!

BEST ANSWER: Hi, I washed it once and the fibre loss decreased a bit. Maybe you washed it a couple more times since spring and the self-dismantling stopped?
