How To Choose a Rain Jacket

Why Do I Need A Rain Jacket?

When the weather turns, having the right rain jacket can make all the difference. Whether you need a reliable shell for your daily commute or a technical jacket for backcountry adventures, understanding waterproofing is key. There are two main types of rainwear: waterproof and water-resistant, each suited to different conditions.

How to Choose the Right Rain Jacket

When shopping for a rain jacket, consider:

  • Climate - Waterproof-breathable jackets are best for heavy rain and all-day protection, while water-resistant options suit light showers and high-output activities.
  • Weight & Packability - Ultralight rain shells are great for fast-and-light missions, while more robust jackets offer better durability.
  • Activity Level - If you're moving fast, a highly breathable jacket will keep you drier inside and out. If you're in extreme conditions, a fully waterproof, seam-sealed jacket is a must.

The Details

There are many factors to consider when choosing a rain jacket. Let's break down the details.

Rainwear Construction

Waterproof, breathable rainwear is defined by its fabric layers. These include:

  • 2-Layer – A membrane bonded to a face fabric with a loose inner lining for comfort.
  • 2.5-Layer – A membrane bonded to a face fabric with a printed protective film for durability.
  • 3-Layer – A membrane sandwiched between a face fabric and inner lining for maximum performance.

Water Repellent Finishes

Water repellent (WR) finishes work by reducing the surface tension of outer/face fabrics encouraging water to bead up and roll off their surface, preventing that water from soaking in.[DM1] It’s important to note that PFC-free WR finishes will wear faster than traditional DWR coatings[DM2] , so regular maintenance is key to keeping your jacket performing at its best.

Breathability & Waterproof Ratings

Balancing waterproofing and breathability is essential for comfort in wet conditions. A higher breathability rating will move perspiration to the outer fabric faster. The higher the hydrostatic head, the higher the level of protection in sustained wet weather.

Breathability (measured in grams per square meter per 24 hours):

  • 5,000g – Everyday wear and short commutes.
  • 10,000g – Low-intensity walking and hiking.
  • 15,000g – Medium-intensity hiking in prolonged rain.
  • 20,000 – High-output activities in challenging conditions

Waterproofing (measured in hydrostatic head, or HH):

  • 5,000mm – Light rain and commuting.
  • 10,000mm – Protection in most everyday conditions.
  • 15,000mm – Moderate to heavy rain for extended periods.
  • 20,000 – Heavy rain for prolonged periods
