Why we made this
Featuring our premium heavy load carrying harness, the Cascade 75L AzTec® Hiking Pack has been a favourite of New Zealand trampers for decades.
  • Product Description
The Cascade is an iconic Macpac hiking back that’s faithfully served generations of explorers around the world. A tough workhorse that’s engineered for both comfort and durability, this 75 litre hiking pack is an ideal choice for multi-day adventures. The Cascade has a clean and functional design that’s been further refined with our Liberator™ FreeLoad harness system — this harness has full length perimeter rods to provide superior support and stability as well as effective weight transfer through to your hips and legs for easier heavy load bearing. Made with robust and weather-resistant Eco AzTec® 8 oz. canvas fabric with a 500D Cordura® nylon base, this pack is constructed to survive abrasive environments and unforgiving weather. It features a large main compartment with an internal base compartment divider, dual ice axe (or walking pole) attachments and it's hydration compatible.

great harness
I went from my trusty Ascent to one of these because of the harness. This is a great harness compared to the harness on the Ascent.
I enjoy the zip loops and mesh side pockets and small pocket under the lid.
And still made out of a kick arse fabric for tough NZ conditions.
Where this pack could be improved...…..
For some reason there is more volume at the top than the bottom, meaning bad things for centre of gravity.
Having a zip at the bottom so as to access things at the bottom of the pack? doesn't make sense when you want your things to stay dry inside, just pack your pack sensibly so as the things at the bottom you wont need until the end of the day.
The biggest thing I probably miss from the Ascent is the extra extension on the lid, so as you can put more stuff in your pack if you are on a longer tramp, this would be easy to do for Macpac, I have asked but they say "no".
sad face.
All in all I am happy with the pack, in my belief there could be a few tweeks to make it a stunner.

Highly recommended backpack for multi-day treks
Excellent backpack; durable, comfortable and great design to carry all you need well organised for multi-day treks.

Worth buying
Not a bad pack. Very durable material and great comfort. Only downside to it for me is the zip on the bottom pouch is very difficult to open and close, I think it is due to the curved line than it follows.
Other than that I’m really enjoying this pack.

Solid, Strong Pack
I’ve owned this pack since mid 2017 and it’s been on several multi-day tramping trips and countless short hikes to wear it in and condition my back.

Advantages:

Size - big enough to carry heaps of gear if you need it,

Waterproof, quick access pockets on top and side are welcome.

Disadvantages:

Comfort - not the most comfortable pack to be honest. I got mine sized correctly by the store but it just isn’t that comfortable compared with my brothers Macpac Torlesse or other brands I’ve tried.

Hip Belt - would be great if hip belt had pockets/pouches to access items while wearing the pack. Obviously I knew it didn’t have this when I bought it but I didn’t realise what an annoyance it would be until I started using the pack without quick access pockets.

All in all a good (but not great), reliable pack.

Durable, comfortable, versatile
A tough pack with plenty of space and well-designed compartmentalization. The Liberator harness system, once fitted correctly, distributes weight in such as a way to make long-hikes comfortable. A great product and excellent value for money.

Hi, do I need a rain cover for this pack?
Joanna E on Oct 7, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi Joanna,

As this pack is only weather resistant, we would still recommend using a Rain Cover if using while hiking in the rain.

Thanks,
The Macpac Team
Hi there, I need to replace the pack frame in my cascade 75 litre, can you please point me in the right direction to do so? Thank you, Hamish
Hamish D on May 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi Hamish,

Thank you for your enquiry.

In this situation we would recommend heading into your local store so the team can contact our repairs department and discuss this further with them.

Thanks - the Macpac Team
What is the recommended load rating?
David M on Apr 2, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hello David,

We don’t have a recommended load rating as such.
This pack is designed to be the best pack we have for heavy loads – typically, for most people, that’s something like 25-30 kg

The pack itself will handle those loads just fine, but depending on the wearer, they will handle them well or not. Even the best pack in the world isn’t going to make a 25kg load easy to carry if you aren’t conditioned to carry that kind of weight!

My recommendation would be to carry as little as you can get away with – if for whatever reason you’re going to need to carry big loads, this is the pack for you.

Kind regards,
The Macpac Team

Macpac Torre 80L AzTec® Hiking Pack
BEST ANSWER: Hello Liam,

The pack doesn't have a specific part designed to secure crampons, but you should be able to attach them either the side of the pack or the back.
