Tough For Travel
I purchased my first 65ltr Macpac Travel pack in 1988. Back then airlines wouldn't take open harness backpacks as check-in luggage. The Macpac travel pack was ideal. It went around the world twice, through Java and around much of Australia. Its real test of strength though was surviving old Sydney airport's disastrous baggage dispensers multiple times. My pack finally died in 2012. It took a year before I had the heart to throw it out. RIP.
There was no choice but another Macpac. I also bought one for my daughter for our 2018 caving trip to the UK and Spain. I find the size of this pack ideal. Inside is shaped much like a normal luggage case and its really easy to pack well. There's also straps to hold everything in place.
These packs are a bit heavy due to their material. That's the trade off for their strength. While the Gemini has a neater waist harness arrangement than my previous pack, it is not quite as comfortable on longer hikes. My previous pack had alloy bars in the back. Also, the method of attaching the day-pack to the main pack is not as neat. My previous day-pack zipped onto the main pack with four snap buckles to take the force. Its was quick and easy. Attaching the Gemini day-pack at the bottom is a bit fiddly. Its the only thing I think Macpac could improve.
Both our Gemini's have taken a bit of a bash already and still look new. At 62 years of age, this pack will probably outlast me.

Survived a few years of abuse!
I used this backpack for a couple of years, including at least a dozen flights. It has doubled as a comfy seat in several border crossings and train stations. It's still in awesome condition, despite my fairly reckless abuse of it. I throw my bag around, dump it in the dirt, even dragged it across a couple of airport floors. It's seen the tops of Guatemalan chicken buses, had dogs sleep on it, and been dropped from second story balconies. It's built tough.

Note: It holds too much, and my next trip I'm debating going with just a 35l carry-on because this thing is heavy when fully packed. On the other hand, I could just pack it lighter, and leave space for souvenirs and bags of Doritos. It would certainly hold up to another couple of years travel.

The daypack is excellent! I've used it every single day for about 4 years now. It's been my work/commuting bag for dozens of jobs, accompanied me on many short hikes, for visiting ancient ruins and for trips to the liquor store. It's pretty small for a daypack but holds what you need if you pack carfully. The only damage after the serious abuse received is that the lining has flaked off. It's still fairly waterproof from rain, but the bottom is basically see-through now- I can't put it down in any puddles.

This bag (daypack especially), has seen some insane levels of disregard from me. The only times I've been careful is when I've had glass bottles inside. They held up incredibly well over ~4 years, bar the lining on the daypack disintegrating.

This was with the AzTec fabric, btw.

It's a big bag, but a bloody fantastic and rugged one.

Hi, would this be suitable for carry-on luggage?
Annie G on Mar 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Annie, this would be too big for carry on in almost every case, you could double check with your airline to make sure. Cheers :)
Does the 75L include the day pack? So the main pack is actually 60L? Or is it 75L main pack plus the 15L day pack (90L total)?
Sam C on May 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Sam - thank you for your comment. The 75L is the total capacity of the pack - 60 + 15 for the daypack. You will find that this rule applies to most backpacking travel packs in the industry.
do the dimensions include the daypack?
hazel l on Jan 15, 2019

Dimensions do not include day pack.

Cheers :)
